Ukhrul Set to Become Manipur’s Summer Capital, Announces Chief Minister
Northeast Desk, 19th October: In a significant move towards regional development, Chief Minister N Biren Singh revealed that Ukhrul town is poised to become the summer capital of Manipur. This announcement came after a cabinet meeting, which marked the first such meeting held in a hill district since the onset of unrest on May 3.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh underlined his government’s commitment to development and welfare, and following a charter of 15 demands presented by civil society organizations in Ukhrul, he accepted their key demand to designate Ukhrul as the summer capital.
These demands encompass addressing issues like the drinking water problem and improving road connectivity with Imphal, among others, many of which were found to be within the purview of the government.
To kickstart this transformation, the Manipur Chief Minister inaugurated crucial development projects and laid the foundation for several others during the cabinet meeting. One of his plans is to establish a New Ukhrul, expressing concern that the present town is congested. However, he emphasized the need for cooperation, particularly regarding land acquisition for these development initiatives. He cited delays in the construction of the 2-lane Imphal-Ukhrul road due to land acquisition issues.
Furthermore, N Biren Singh revealed that his government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is exploring the establishment of a medical college in the Ukhrul district. While the requirement for a medical college typically includes a 200-bed hospital, a recent statement by Prime Minister Modi has inspired the Chief Minister to turn the dream of Ukhrul’s residents into reality.
