Ukraine War: Barrage Of Russian Missile Strikes Trigger Power, Water Cuts In Kyiv

Guwahati: Over 80% of Kyiv residents experienced power outages and water shortages on Monday as Russian missiles hit crucial infrastructure sites in the central Ukrainian district of Cherkasy and the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, Ukrainian officials said Monday.

The attack happened a few days after Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out a drone attack on its Black Sea Fleet, according to CNN.

“Explosions and air raid sirens were heard in Kyiv early on Monday and 80 per cent of residents were left without water – with many losing electricity, too – following power outages caused by Russian strikes, the capital’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said on Telegram.

Klitschko, who also said that emergency services are making every effort to stabilise the situation, was quoted by CNN as saying that Ukraine is experiencing massive blackouts and the residents are experiencing severe water shortages as one of the strikes hit an energy facility that powered 350,000 apartments in the capital.

Additionally, strikes were reported in Zaphorizhzhia’s southern district as well.

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, also warned people in the war-torn nation to stock up on water because the situation is becoming worse.

According to CNN, which cited Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Kyiv has already finalised agreements with at least 12 nations to acquire roughly 1,000 units of electrical equipment, including generators, and the nation is currently in contact with the European Union (EU) and NATO.

“Currently, due to damage to the energy facility near Kyiv, 80% of the capital’s consumers remain without water supply,” he said on Telegram. “Just in case, we ask you to stock up on water from the nearest pumps and points of sale. Specialists are doing everything possible to return water to the apartments of Kyiv residents.”

Ihor Terekhov, the mayor of Kharkiv, reported on Telegram that two missiles had struck a vital piece of the city’s infrastructure. According to Ihor Taburets, chief of the regional military administration, several areas of the Cherkasy region are without power as a result of damage to a crucial infrastructure facility.

Over the weekend, power shortages brought on the Russian shelling persisted in Kiev. It will take weeks to fix the electrical systems, according to Klitschko.

As Ukraine enters the winter, officials there think that Russia is deliberately targeting critical infrastructure with its nationwide drone and cruise missile attacks. Russian forces’ attacks on thermal power plants, electrical sub-stations, transformers, and pipelines have a direct effect on Ukrainians’ access to power, water, and the internet.

According to the nation’s defence ministry, Russia has halted its involvement in a grain deal mediated by the UN that is thought to be essential to addressing the world food deficit.

Moscow made the announcement after attributing Saturday’s drone strike on Crimea to Ukraine. Ukraine charged Russia with fabricating “false terrorist incidents” and using the agreement as “blackmail.”

By Sunday, Ukraine reported that more than 200 vessels had been prevented from carrying out shipments. More and more of Kiev’s friends denounced Moscow’s action.
