ULFA (I) Brigadier Rupam Asom Now in NIA Custody, Intensive Interrogation Underway

Guwahati: In a significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken over the custody of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) brigadier Rupam Asom, also known as Kant Borah. This comes days after his initial apprehension by the Tinsukia police.

Sources privy to the investigation have confirmed that the senior ULFA (I) operative has been undergoing intensive interrogation sessions for the past three days at the NIA’s Sonapur office, located near Guwahati.

Rupam Asom is considered a pivotal figure in several ongoing investigations, with a dossier of serious charges against him including murder, abduction, and various armed insurgent activities. The NIA had previously registered multiple cases against him as part of its widespread efforts to dismantle insurgent networks operating across the Northeast.

With his formal custody now secured, NIA officials have indicated that case files linked to past incidents involving the ULFA leader, some of which had remained dormant due to his prolonged absconding status, are now being actively reopened and pursued.

Security sources are hopeful that Asom’s interrogation will yield critical insights into the ULFA (I)’s intricate operational structure, its clandestine recruitment networks, and crucial transborder linkages that have long been a subject of concern for security agencies.

While the NIA has yet to disclose the specific charges under which Rupam Asom will be produced before the court, further developments are anticipated in the coming days as the investigation intensifies.
