ULFA (I) should hand over bodies of capital punishment victims, says Assam DGP GP Singh

Guwahati, 3rd October: Shortly after ULFA (I) issued a press statement claiming responsibility for the execution of senior ULFA-I leader Brigadier Salim Asom and cadre Bornali, Assam DGP GP Singh called on the banned group to hand over the deceased individuals’ bodies to their respective families.

GP Singh emphasized that press releases have their limitations and urged the outlawed organization to deliver the bodies to their families for proper last rites.

Taking to his X handle, the top cop wrote, “প্ৰেছ বিজ্ঞপ্তিৰ ভূমিকা সীমিত। অনুগ্ৰহ কৰি মৃতদেহবোৰ ঘূৰাই পঠাওক। পৰিয়ালক অন্তিম শ্ৰদ্ধা জনোৱাৰ সুযোগ হওক।” roughly translating to “Press releases have a limited role. Please send the bodies back. Please pay your last respects to the family.”

Lachit Hazarika, known as Brigadier Salim Asom, who had close ties to ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah and had been a member since the 1990s, received the death penalty in Myanmar’s Sagain area at Hachi camp on September 20. Bornali, a boxer from Tinsukia who joined the banned outfit in 2021, also faced the same fate at the hands of the armed militant group.

In an emailed media statement, the insurgent group accused Lachit Hazarika and Bornali Asom, also known as Nayanmani Chetia, of blatantly violating the organization’s constitution and policies. They alleged collaboration with Indian intelligence forces and the coercion of fellow comrades into surrendering their weapons to the enemy.
