Umiam Dam May Reopen to Regular Traffic by End of July, Says Meghalaya Power Minister

Northeast Desk, 27th July: Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal announced that the Umiam dam is expected to resume regular traffic operations by the end of July. This development follows an inspection meeting focused on the retrofitting work at the dam.

Mondal indicated that the bridge, a vital link for Meghalaya and a primary route to Shillong, may fully reopen soon. A high-level meeting involving experts from IIT-Guwahati, police personnel, PWD officials, and representatives from the East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi district administrations is scheduled for July 29 to finalize the reopening date.

The Umiam bridge, which has been undergoing extensive retrofitting and maintenance since December 14, 2023, faced delays beyond the initial 4-5 month timeline recommended by IIT-Guwahati.
