Lakhimpur, Assam: An undertrial prisoner accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was discovered dead in his cell at the Lakhimpur jail on Wednesday morning.
The deceased, identified as Paban Barua, a resident of Narayanpur Chapori in Dhakuakhana, had been in judicial custody since last month for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor.
Jail authorities suspect that Barua died by suicide, although the exact cause will be determined following a post-mortem examination.
The incident has raised questions about inmate safety and monitoring within the prison. Local authorities have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Barua’s death.
