Unexploded Mortar Shell Found in Assam’s Tamulpur District, Defused Safely by Bomb Squad

Guwahati: A major tragedy was averted in Assam’s Tamulpur district after an unexploded 81 mm mortar shell was discovered by alert villagers in the Khandajan River near Bimalanagar, close to an old army firing range. The area falls under the jurisdiction of the Nagrijuli Police Outpost.

The shell was exposed due to recent soil erosion and spotted by residents on Sunday. Upon receiving the alert, local police and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel quickly cordoned off the area and maintained tight security through the day to prevent any mishap.

On Monday morning, a bomb disposal unit from Changsari Military Station arrived at the site and safely recovered the live shell. Senior Superintendent of Police Diganta Kumar Choudhury confirmed that the mortar was defused successfully at 11:20 AM with no casualties or property damage.

The operation was executed with high caution and precision in the presence of police officials, SSB personnel, and the local village headman. The successful defusal drew appreciation from the local community, who expressed relief and praised the prompt action by security forces.

Authorities have issued a public advisory urging residents to stay vigilant and immediately report any suspicious or military-grade objects, particularly in areas that were once part of training grounds or firing ranges.
