Union Government Extends AFSPA in Arunachal Pradesh for Another 6 Months

Northeast Desk, 28th March: The Union Government has announced the extension of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in three districts of Arunachal Pradesh for another six months, effective from April 1.

A notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) specified that the extension covers Tirap, Changlang, and Longding districts, as well as areas under the jurisdiction of three police stations in Namsai district.

The decision to extend AFSPA comes after a review of the law and order situation in the state, with the government deeming it necessary to maintain security in these regions. As per the notification, these areas were declared ‘disturbed areas’ under Section 3 of the AFSPA via a previous notification dated September 26, 2023.

The extension underscores the ongoing security challenges prevalent in these districts, warranting the continuation of special powers granted to the armed forces. The government remains committed to ensuring peace and security in Arunachal Pradesh amid persisting law enforcement issues in certain areas.
