Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia Highlights Development Progress in Sikkim and Northeast

Northeast Desk, 6th September: During his recent visit to Sikkim, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia praised the state’s progress and the broader development efforts in the Northeast under the BJP-led government. Scindia revealed that over Rs 25,000 crore has been allocated to the Northeast region since 2014, marking a period of substantial investment and growth.

At a press conference, Scindia described Sikkim as “more than beauty,” applauding its vibrant landscapes and the warmth of its people. He attributed the region’s development to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity.

Scindia detailed key achievements, including a significant increase in the railway budget from Rs 2,000 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 10,000 crore in 2023. The national highway network has expanded to 16,000 kilometers, and rural road construction now covers 50,000 kilometers with an investment of Rs 48,000 crore. Additionally, air connectivity has improved with 17 airports now serving the region, including Pakyong Airport in Sikkim.

The expansion of Sikkim’s road infrastructure was also highlighted, with the Sikkim National Highway increasing from 140 km to 709 km. The ongoing Sivok-Rangpo Rail Project (SRRP) is set to connect Sikkim to the national rail network by August 2025.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed gratitude for Scindia’s visit, noting its positive impact. “Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia’s visit has been a great boost for us,” Tamang said. “In just two days, he has sanctioned projects worth over Rs 400 crore. We feel he is like family, not only to us but to the entire state of Sikkim.”

Tamang also extended an invitation to Scindia for Sikkim’s 50th anniversary celebrations as part of the Union of India, scheduled for May 16, 2025.

The visit included a review meeting at Samman Bhawan, where Scindia assured full support from the Ministry of DoNER for advancing development initiatives in Sikkim. The meeting was attended by Minister Raju Basnett, senior officials from DoNER, and representatives from the Government of Sikkim.
