Kohima: Union Minister Mansukh L Mandaviya applauded Nagaland’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty during an interactive meeting with officials and sports representatives at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima on December 7.
The visit coincided with the 25th Hornbill Festival, where Mandaviya highlighted the state’s unique identity as the “Land of Festivals.”
Addressing officials from the Departments of Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, alongside sports association members, Mandaviya praised the people of Nagaland for preserving their ancient traditions while embracing progress and inclusivity. “Nagaland celebrates its unique traditions with pride, reflecting the rich diversity and unity of its people,” he stated, emphasizing their role in building a progressive India.
Mandaviya expressed enthusiasm for the Hornbill Festival, noting its vibrant cultural displays, including traditional dances, handloom artistry, and local cuisine. “The festival is a testament to India’s cultural diversity, exemplifying the strength of unity in diversity and reinforcing the importance of preserving our shared heritage,” he said.
The minister also highlighted India’s transformative journey in sports under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He credited strategic initiatives like the Khelo India Program, launched in 2018 to promote grassroots sports, and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), introduced in 2014 to support elite athletes. These programs have elevated India’s global sporting presence, turning the nation into a formidable competitor in events such as the Olympics and Paralympics.
Mandaviya stressed inclusivity in sports, particularly for women, praising initiatives like the ASMITA Khelo India Women’s League for fostering gender equality and empowering female athletes.
During the meeting, Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister and Secretary General of the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA), commended the state’s rapid strides in sports despite its late start. He emphasized the importance of continued investment in infrastructure and athlete development to sustain this momentum.
Mandaviya’s visit underscored the government’s commitment to cultural preservation and sports development, strengthening Nagaland’s role in India’s diverse cultural and athletic fabric.
