Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Urges Support for ‘One Nation, One Election’ in Assam

Assam: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called on the people of Assam to back Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘One Nation, One Election’ during an official function where over 50,000 homes and agricultural equipment were distributed to beneficiaries.

Chouhan highlighted the inefficiencies caused by frequent elections, which he said disrupt governance and developmental activities.

“Whether something happens or not, elections are always taking place in our nation—365 days a year,” Chouhan remarked, pointing to the repetitive cycle of assembly and Lok Sabha elections. He stressed that simultaneous elections would enable uninterrupted governance for five years, reduce financial waste, and allow leaders to focus on public service.

Chouhan urged attendees to pledge their support for the PM’s initiative, emphasizing that a unified electoral process would lead to greater efficiency and continuity in government efforts.

At the event, Chouhan virtually inaugurated 50,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), a project valued at ₹650 crore. These houses are part of a larger goal to uplift rural communities by improving infrastructure and living conditions.

Chouhan praised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his leadership in achieving nearly 19 lakh completed homes out of a 20 lakh target under PMAY-G. He also announced the sanctioning of an additional 3.88 lakh houses for the current financial year, with plans for another 3.88 lakh in the next financial year, ensuring sustained support for rural families.

The Union Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding eligibility criteria under PMAY-G, aiming to include families who were previously excluded. “Efforts are underway to ensure that no deserving family is left behind in accessing housing benefits,” he assured.

In addition to housing initiatives, Chouhan oversaw the distribution of agricultural machinery and equipment to thousands of farmers. Power tillers, weeders, threshers, pump sets, sprayers, and other tools were provided under flagship schemes such as the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) and Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOVCD-NER). These efforts aim to boost productivity and empower rural livelihoods.

Chouhan’s visit underscored the government’s focus on rural development and self-reliance, with a clear message of support for streamlined governance through unified elections.
