Union Minister Sonowal Reviews Key Infrastructure Projects in Assam

Guwahati: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently conducted an extensive review of two major infrastructure projects underway in Assam.

During his visit, he assessed the progress of the Northeast’s first ship repair facility at the Pandu Multi-Modal Terminal, along with an elevated road corridor project.

According to an official statement, both projects signify a strategic enhancement of Assam’s transportation and connectivity infrastructure.

The ship repair facility, under construction with an investment of Rs 208 crore, is being developed by Hooghly-Cochin Shipyard Limited (HCSL).

This facility is set to bolster the region’s inland water transport network by providing essential repair services for ships operating along the Brahmaputra River.

Speaking on the project’s importance, Minister Sonowal highlighted Pandu’s strategic location for the Northeast’s waterways and underscored the government’s dedication to maximizing the region’s logistical capabilities.

Sonowal also reviewed the development of last-mile connectivity to Pandu Port via an alternative road to NH27, with an investment of Rs 180 crore.

This road corridor aims to streamline access to the port, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of goods transport across Assam and its neighboring states.

In addition, the minister met with senior officials from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to evaluate ongoing projects along the Brahmaputra, designated as National Waterways 2.

These projects, which involve significant port and terminal upgrades, are progressing with an investment of Rs 645 crore.

Moreover, Sonowal emphasized Assam’s growing potential as a river tourism hub, as the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways is working to develop tourism infrastructure along the Brahmaputra.

Seven new tourist jetties are planned for prominent locations, including Uzanbazar in Guwahati, Bogibeel Bridge, and Dikhow Mukh. These jetties aim to boost tourism and facilitate water sports activities, creating new opportunities for local communities.

Collectively, these projects reflect a substantial commitment by the government, with investments totaling over Rs 760 crore.

Sonowal reaffirmed that these initiatives align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to transform Assam’s waterways and connectivity, reinforcing the region’s role as a critical logistics and tourism hub in Northeast India.
