Union Ministry of Finance Sanctions ₹2,500 Crores for Road Development in Meghalaya
The Union Ministry of Finance has allocated ₹2,500 crores to Meghalaya for the development of new roads under the Externally Aided Projects (EAP). This decision was announced following a meeting between Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on August 12. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong also attended the meeting.
Chief Minister Sangma expressed his gratitude for the funding on the microblogging site X, stating, “Had a fruitful meeting with Hon’ble Union Minister Smt. @nsitharaman ji. Expressed my gratitude for sanctioning new roads under the Externally Aided Projects (EAP) worth ₹2500 Cr.”
During the meeting, Sangma also requested support for establishing growth hubs in New Shillong and other areas. The Ministry of Finance’s allocation follows an earlier approval of ₹2,000 crores for road and logistics infrastructure development under the Second Phase of the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP), also known as the Meghalaya Economic Growth Accelerator (MEGA) Corridor project.
The MITP, which previously received ₹880 crores in support from the World Bank for its first phase, aims to improve key roadways, including Baejendoba-Resubelpara-Mendipathar-Damra, Shillong–Diengpasoh, and Pasyih–Garampani. The project will be implemented in multiple phases to enhance transportation infrastructure across the state.
