Unrest and Political Dynamics Mark Start of 18th Lok Sabha Session in Manipur
National Desk, 25th June: The 18th Lok Sabha session commenced amidst heightened tension as MPs from Manipur took their oaths, prompting slogans of ‘Manipur, Manipur’ and ‘Justice for Manipur’ from members of the INDIA alliance.
Alfred Kanngam S Arthur, representing the Outer Lok Sabha constituency, took his oath in English while adorned in a traditional Tangkhul community shawl. His oath-taking was met with fervent slogans advocating for Manipur’s cause by the INDIA alliance.
Similarly, Angomcha Bimol Akoizam from the Inner Manipur constituency took his oath in Meiteilon (Manipuri language), also accompanied by slogans emphasizing Manipur’s issues and calls for justice.
Both constituencies in Manipur, which have recently witnessed unrest, were won by the Congress party. Alfred Arthur’s participation in public platforms was barred for seven years by the United Naga Council, a significant Naga apex body in Manipur, citing decisions made during recent emergency assemblies.
Additionally, S. Kho John and Allyson Abonmai, who contested independently in the Outer Manipur constituency, finished behind Arthur and Kachui Timothy Zimik of the Naga People’s Front (NPF).
The developments underscore ongoing political complexities and tensions in Manipur, reflected during the inaugural sessions of the Lok Sabha.
