Unrest in Bangladesh: Six Police Stations Attacked and Looted in Chittagong

International Desk, 6th August: In the aftermath of political turmoil in Bangladesh, at least six police stations in Chittagong were attacked, vandalized, and set ablaze by miscreants, resulting in the looting of weapons, ammunition, and various equipment. The violence erupted following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.

The affected police stations under the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) include Chandgaon, Patenga, EPZ, Kotowali, Akbar Shah, and Pahartali. The unrest initially began as celebratory gatherings but quickly escalated into violence, targeting not only police stations but also the homes and offices of Awami League leaders and activists.

Several police officers were injured during these attacks, and the assailants managed to seize a substantial amount of police weaponry and equipment. Around 5 p.m. local time, attackers attempted to breach the main gate of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Lines in Dampara. In response, police deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Despite these efforts, hundreds of people gathered in front of the main gate, attempting to forcefully enter and attack the police commissioner’s office. The police urged the crowd to disperse, but the situation escalated as the agitated crowd began pelting bricks at the office, further intensifying the chaos.

This surge in violence underscores the deepening crisis in Bangladesh, as authorities struggle to maintain order amidst growing political instability.
