UP Polls: BSP to finalise candidates in Mayawati’s meeting

Guwahati: Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), will convene a high-level meeting of party leaders on Sunday in Lucknow to finalize the party’s candidates for the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

While addressing a press conference here today, Mayawati stated “Assembly elections in all the five states must be held in a peaceful manner. The administration of the police force must work be impartial. Uttar Pradesh voters should vote for progress. All EC criteria will be followed by our party. I will chair a high-level meeting of party officials today regarding the final selection of candidates”

On Saturday, the Election Commission issued poll dates for five states, including Uttar Pradesh, which will hold a seven-phase assembly election beginning February 10.

However, on 10th March, all states will have their ballots counted.

Following the Covid-19 outburst, the Commission ordered that no physical political rallies or roadshows be permitted until January 15, after which rallies and election campaign gatherings will be permitted only in designated areas and with district administration approval.

It may be noted that the BJP gained 312 Assembly seats in the 2017 Assembly elections, a landslide victory. In the elections for the 403-member Assembly, the party received 39.67% of the vote.

Furthermore, the Samajwadi Party (SP) won 47 seats, the BSP 19 seats, and the Congress only seven seats.
