UP Sisters gift life to Brothers on Raksha Bandhan
Guwahati: On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, two sisters have gifted life to their brother who was terminally ill with liver failure.
A teenager named Akshat from Badaun in Uttar Pradesh was fighting for his life due to liver failure and the issue was complicated further since the patient was overweight.
The 14 years old boy was given a fresh lease on life by his siblings. The two of Akshat’s sisters named Neha and Prena donated portions of their liver to him for transplant surgery, sources said.
Dr. Neelam Mohan, director, pediatric liver diseases and transplantation at Medanta hospital said that for a successful transplant, it was needed that the transplanted liver weighs at least 0.8% to 1% of the patient’s body weight. In this case, a single donor liver half weighed only 0.5 to 0.55% of the recipient’s weight. Hence, two liver halves were needed to make up the required liver volume,” she said, adding that they were delighted that the procedure worked out well.
She further said that while the period of recovery in ICU after the surgery was complex, all the three siblings recovered well and the story of these siblings will bring cheers to the family on the eve of Raksha Bandhan.
