Upgrading College To University Will Take Time, Says Education Minister

Guwahati, 16 June: Assam’s Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced that the process of upgrading eight colleges in the state to universities has been scrapped. Eight colleges in the state will not be upgraded to universities.

In the Budget for 2023-24, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog had announced to upgrade a total of 8 heritage in the state. The colleges were Sivasagar College, Kokrajhar Government College, Bongaigaon College, Jagannath Baruah College in Jorhat, North Lakhimpur College, Sandikai Girls’ College, Nagaon College and Gurucharan College respectively.

During the presentation of the budget for 2023-24, some had supported the decision while others opposed the decision. While the process of upgrading these eight colleges to universities continues, the state higher education department today cancelled the decision through a notification.

Additional Secretary, Department of Higher Education Kavita Deka sent a notice to eight colleges announcing the upgradation to the university informing them of the cancellation of the earlier decision.
