US Senate Approves USD 12.3 Bn Aid For Ukraine In War Against Russia

Guwahati: The US Senate authorised providing $12, 3 billion in urgent aid to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia on Thursday. The step will also significantly aid Ukraine in the fight in addition to sustaining government spending for a few weeks.

According to the New York Times, the US Senate passed a short-term budget plan on Thursday to keep the government financed past a Friday deadline. According to the proposed legislation, Ukraine would get around USD 12.3 billion in emergency aid, including USD 3 billion for military supplies and equipment.

Additionally, it gives Kyiv USD 4.5 billion to maintain the stability of the national finances and the operation of the government so that the citizens of the war-torn nation may receive essential services.

The assistance for Ukraine comes immediately after Congress approved two earlier packages totaling about USD 54 billion.

The US Defense Department said on August 19 that it would give Ukraine an additional USD 775 million in military aid, including HIMARS missiles, artillery, and mine-clearing devices.

More than 100 nations and territories have benefited from US investments totaling more than USD 4.2 billion since 1993 for the safe removal of landmines, explosive remnants of war (ERW), and excess small arms and light weapons (SA/LW) and ammunition.

The US has provided Ukraine with security assistance for a total of almost USD 9.8 billion since the start of the Biden Administration. The US has given Ukraine security aid totaling more than $11.8 billion since 2014.

Notably, on February 24, Russia began a “special military operation” in Ukraine that the West has dubbed an unprovoked war. The Western nations have also slapped a number of devastating sanctions on Moscow as a result of this.

In addition, Russia will organise a signing ceremony at the Kremlin on Friday to officially annex the four occupied regions of Ukraine, according to Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to Al Jazeera, spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Thursday that a signing ceremony for the inclusion of the additional regions into Russia would take place at 15:00 (1200 GMT) in the Georgian Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace.

Putin will deliver a speech at this gathering, he continued.

The Russian government’s vote on the annexation of Ukraine’s occupied areas was largely derided as a “sham referendum” and received harsh criticism from several nations.
