US: Tornado Hits Mississipi , 26 Dead & Dozens Injured
Guwahati: As many 26 people were killed and around 12 others were injured after a powerful tornado struck Alabama and Mississippi in the US on March 25.
The devastation caused by the tornado storm paralysed rescue efforts in a number of rural towns. Governor of Mississippi Tate Reeves has issued a state of emergency to aid in responding to the damage.
US President Joe Biden also described the images coming out of Mississippi as “heartbreaking”, and said the federal government would “do everything we can to help”.
“We will remain there for as long as necessary. We will work together to provide the support you need to recover,” added Biden.
Further storms are expected to hit Georgia and Alabama early on Sunday perhaps bringing very heavy hail.
The storm system that tore through Mississippi created a tornado which devastated communities throughout the state. The most potent tornado blew down power lines, wrecked dozens of small town buildings and turned cars on their sides.
According to its mayor, the small town of Rolling Fork which is in Sharkey County in western Mississippi, has virtually disappeared.
According to the tracking website, heavy storms also slammed Alabama and Tennessee, knocking out electricity to around 60,000 people early on Saturday.
