Uttar Pradesh: Deadly Clashes Erupt During Mosque Survey
Tensions boiled over in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday as a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid turned violent, leading to the deaths of two individuals.
The survey, initiated following allegations that the mosque was built on the site of a demolished Hindu temple, sparked protests from local residents. As the survey team, accompanied by heavy police security, arrived at the mosque, hundreds of protesters gathered, hurling stones at the police and the team.
In response, the police resorted to tear gas to disperse the unruly mob. While the exact cause of the deaths remains under investigation, reports suggest that some individuals may have succumbed to bullet injuries.
Despite appeals for calm from religious leaders and senior police officials, the situation spiraled out of control, resulting in widespread violence. The police have detained 18 individuals and are actively pursuing others involved in the clashes.
The Advocate Commission, tasked with conducting the survey, successfully completed the process amidst the chaos. The commission is expected to submit its findings to the court on November 29.
The incident has raised serious concerns about communal tensions and the potential for further violence. Authorities have imposed strict security measures in the area to prevent any further escalation.
