Uttarakhand Assembly Convenes Special Session for Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill

National Desk, 6TH February: The state assembly of Uttarakhand has convened a special session dedicated to the passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, a significant legislative proposal aimed at standardizing marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws for all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation.

Presented by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the UCC bill proposes uniformity in personal laws governing family matters across all religions, including provisions to ban practices such as polygamy and establish a uniform age of marriage for all citizens.

During the four-day special session, CM Dhami arrived at the assembly carrying a copy of the Constitution, symbolizing his commitment to constitutional principles underlying the UCC bill. The tabling of the bill followed the submission of a report by a five-member expert committee led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.

The introduction of the UCC bill in Uttarakhand sets a precedent for other states, with potential consideration of similar bills in assemblies across the country, including Gujarat and Assam.

While this legislative initiative has garnered a variety of responses, with some praising its national significance and others expressing concerns about potential polarization, CM Dhami’s action represents a significant step towards the BJP’s goal of implementing uniform civil laws in India, beginning with Uttarakhand.
