Uttarakhand Makes History with Passage of Uniform Civil Code Bill

National Desk, 7th February: The Uttarakhand 2024 Uniform Civil Code Bill, championed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and his government, has been successfully passed in the House, marking a historic milestone for the state.

With this significant development, Uttarakhand becomes the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code, signaling a bold move towards harmonizing personal laws across religious communities.

The comprehensive UCC Bill, presented by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the state assembly, proposes uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws for all citizens, irrespective of their religion.

Aiming to bring about uniformity in personal laws, the bill addresses crucial issues such as polygamy and sets a uniform age of marriage for all citizens, transcending religious boundaries.

The passage of the bill not only positions Uttarakhand as a pioneer in legal reforms but also sets a precedent for other states to follow suit. Reports suggest that similar bills may soon be under consideration in assemblies of states like Gujarat and Assam.

However, the introduction of the UCC Bill has sparked diverse reactions, with some viewing it as a significant step towards national integration, while others criticize it as a political strategy aimed at vote polarization.

Nevertheless, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s initiative underscores the BJP’s commitment to realizing the vision of uniform civil laws in India, starting with the progressive reforms in Uttarakhand.
