Vantara Pledges Support for Madhuri’s Return to Kolhapur, Proposes State-of-the-Art Rehab Facility
National: Vantara, a renowned animal rescue and rehabilitation centre, has clarified its position on the relocation of Madhuri, a beloved elephant from Kolhapur’s Jain Matha. The organisation issued a detailed statement addressing public concern and the deep emotional connection the community shares with the elephant, confirming that its involvement was strictly under the supervision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court. Vantara emphasized that it did not initiate the move but was tasked with providing veterinary and logistical support as per judicial directives.
In a move to honour public sentiment and spiritual ties, Vantara has offered its full support for any legal efforts by the Jain Matha or the Maharashtra Government to bring Madhuri back to Kolhapur. This gesture comes with the promise of providing complete veterinary and technical assistance to ensure the elephant’s safe and dignified transfer, pending court approval. Vantara’s statement also outlined a forward-looking proposal to establish a specialized rehabilitation centre for Madhuri in the Nandani area of Kolhapur, to be developed in collaboration with the Jain Matha and the State Government.
This proposed facility is designed to meet both national animal welfare laws and international standards, featuring advanced amenities to cater to Madhuri’s specific health needs. The plans include hydrotherapy and laser therapy for joint and muscular relief, along with multiple water bodies for natural movement. The centre will also boast a lush, chain-free open habitat, covered shelters, and 24×7 veterinary care with an on-site clinic. The inclusion of rubberized and soft sand resting areas is a thoughtful addition to alleviate pressure from arthritis and foot rot, common ailments in older elephants.
Vantara’s statement concluded with a heartfelt apology, using the Jain phrase “Michhami Dukkadam,” to seek forgiveness if its court-mandated involvement had caused any distress to the Jain community or the residents of Kolhapur. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to animal welfare and community cooperation, urging all stakeholders to unite for Madhuri’s well-being. “Let us move forward not in opposition but in unity, with love for Madhuri at the heart of it all,” the statement read, concluding with a call for mutual respect as they work together for the elephant’s future.
