Village Headman Suspended
Guwahati: The village headman (Gaonbura) of Kaliabor in Nagaon district of Assam was suspended on Tuesday.
The suspended Gaonbura identified as Golap Saikia was the head of the Kuhimari village.
According to reports, Saikia was suspended due to allegations that she misled the office by the Circle Officer.
He was charged with impersonating dead individuals to sign documents transferring land ownership rights to dalals.
Saikia collaborated with a gang that used fake signatures to register land in the Koliabor Revenue Office and she consented to the registration of the falsified documents.
The signatures used for registration were faked for the sake of selling the land.
Signatures of at least 13 lessees, including four dead lessees, were fabricated.
The investigation was carried out in response to some locals’ objections.
The complainants stated their displeasure that, despite the headman’s suspension, no action had been taken against the gang that was responsible for faking signatures.
