Villager’s Quick Thinking Saves Rare Chinese Pangolin in Manipur

Senapati, Manipur: A Chinese pangolin, a species critically endangered due to rampant illegal trade, was successfully rescued and released back into its natural habitat in Manipur’s Senapati district, showcasing a commendable synergy between local communities and forest officials in wildlife preservation.

The timely intervention began when Joseph Kaba, a vigilant farmer from Sadim Malingli village, chanced upon the disoriented pangolin. Without hesitation, Kaba, who also chairs the Sadim Malingli village, promptly alerted the authorities. The Senapati Forest Department swiftly mobilised a dedicated team, which included Dr. Chang L, a veterinary officer from the District Veterinary Office, to assess the situation and ensure the creature’s well-being.

This particular rescue carries significant weight for conservation efforts in the region, given that Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla) are unfortunately among the most trafficked mammals globally. Prior to its release, the pangolin underwent a comprehensive health check-up, meticulously examined for any injuries or potential pathogens, and was subsequently cleared for return to the wild under the stringent provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

“This operation truly underscores the vital importance of mitigating human-wildlife conflict and extending compassion to these voiceless creatures,” remarked Joseph Kaba, highlighting the community’s commitment.

This successful rescue is not an isolated incident but rather a testament to the broader conservation initiatives spearheaded by the Sadim Pukhri village community. For over a decade, this community has been diligently safeguarding forest areas surrounding Sadim Lizai Lake. These invaluable efforts are primarily driven by the proactive students and youth of the Sadim Lizai Students & Youth Association (SLSYA), working hand-in-hand with village authorities. Forest officials have consistently reiterated that active community participation is the bedrock of successful wildlife conservation and have urged the public to continue supporting these ongoing efforts to secure natural resources for generations to come.
