Violence and Arson Rock Tripura’s Dhalai District, Shops and Homes Destroyed

Northeast, July 16, 2024: A recent wave of violence and arson in Tripura’s Dhalai district, specifically in the Ganda Twisa sub-division, has resulted in the complete destruction of around 30 to 40 shops and 20 to 25 houses, as reported by local authorities. Following the incident, four individuals have been apprehended.

District Magistrate Saju Vaheed A and Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai conducted a peace meeting on July 14 to restore calm among residents. They actively engaged with local businessmen, encouraging them to reopen the market, which had been closed for two days.

During the meeting, District Magistrate Vaheed disclosed that local businessmen presented a four-point demand charter focusing on security issues. He assured affected families of imminent compensation and pledged to facilitate the return of sheltered individuals to their homes. In response to community requests, security camps have been set up in affected areas.

Superintendent of Police Rai attributed the outbreak of violence to heightened emotions stemming from a July 7 altercation that tragically resulted in one fatality. He emphasized that authorities swiftly quelled the situation and urged residents to disregard unsubstantiated rumors.

The incidents of violence spanned seven locations on the outskirts of Gandacherra. Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the July 12 unrest and are optimistic about apprehending the main instigators soon.

Authorities have issued a plea for peace, underscoring the deployment of senior officers and Central Armed Police Force personnel in substantial numbers to ensure community safety. The local administration remains committed to evaluating the extent of damages and extending necessary support to affected individuals and businesses.
