Violence Erupts at Sikkim Meeting Over Proposed Abolition of Traditional Dzomsa System
Lachung, Sikkim: A public meeting held on December 12th in Thomchi Playground, Sikkim, to discuss the proposed abolition of the traditional Dzomsa system devolved into a violent confrontation, leading to two police cases being registered at the Lachung Police Station.
The meeting, convened by local residents Pema Wangdhi Lachungpa and Dorjee Chewang Lachungpa, aimed to discuss a memorandum submitted to the District Magistrate of Mangan on July 21st, advocating for the abolition of the Dzomsa system. This memorandum, signed by seven individuals, sparked heated debate among the 250 attendees.
During the discussions, tensions escalated, culminating in a violent altercation between Kundup Dorjee Lachungpa and his brother and members of the Dzomsa. Several individuals, including Damdi Lachungpa and seven others, were accused of assaulting the brothers. Both victims were subsequently hospitalized at the District Hospital in Mangan.
A separate case was filed against Kundup Dorjee Lachungpa under Sections 270, 125, and 3(5) of the BNS 2023, after he allegedly brandished a khukuri, creating a state of panic and public disorder.
The Dzomsa system is a traditional form of self-governance in Lachen and Lachung villages, where a council of villagers, known as the Dzomsa, administers the community and resolves disputes. The system, established in the 19th century, has been recognized by the government since 1985.
The investigation into both incidents is ongoing.
