Violence Escalates in Assam’s Samaguri Constituency Ahead of By-Election
Assam: As Assam’s by-election nears, tensions are surging in Samaguri constituency, Nagaon district, where violent clashes between BJP and Congress supporters have raised security concerns.
A series of confrontations has marked the pre-election period, with multiple injuries reported among party workers since the election schedule was announced last month.
On Monday, two BJP workers, Abdul Hannan and Ruhul Amin, were injured in Bogamukh village during a confrontation with Congress supporters.
The altercation reportedly began after BJP members filmed inside a Congress election office, which Congress workers viewed as a provocation. Local police from Rupahihat station intervened to restore order and disperse the crowd.
This incident follows a series of violent events in the area. On Saturday night, an unidentified group allegedly attacked a BJP worker, resulting in injuries, while three Congress offices in Samaguri were vandalized. In a separate clash the previous day, BJP members Yasin Ali and Sahjahan Ali sustained injuries during an altercation with Congress supporters.
Adding to the tensions, police seized Rs 1,11,800 in cash on October 31 in Samaguri, reportedly being transported in violation of election laws, raising suspicions of election-related misconduct. Another incident on October 24 saw BJP workers allegedly attacking journalists covering Congress candidate Tanzil Hussain’s return after filing his nomination, resulting in injuries to at least 15 journalists.
The Election Commission has scheduled the by-elections for November 13 in five Assam constituencies, including Samaguri, Sidli, Bongaigaon, Dholai, and Behali, with results to be declared on November 23. Security forces have been placed on high alert in an effort to maintain order and prevent further violence as political tensions continue to rise.
