Violence in Manipur: Tax Department Officer Dragged Out of Home and Killed

National Desk, 6 May: An Income Tax Department officer of Imphal was “dragged out” of his official flat and killed amid the recent escalation of violence in Manipur, the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Association stated on Friday. In a tweet, the association strongly condemned “the dastardly act of violence resulting in the death of Letminthang Haokip, Tax Assistant in Imphal”. “No cause or ideology can justify the killing of an innocent public servant on duty. Our thoughts are with his family in this difficult hour,” it said.

It also released a photograph of Haokip, claiming he was “dragged out of his official quarter in Imphal by Meitei miscreants and beaten to death.” The organisation is a national body of the Income Tax Department of India. A defence official claimed that 13,000 people had been evacuated and sent to secure shelters as a result of the terrible ethnic violence that had been occurring in several areas of the state over the preceding 48 hours.

A CRPF CoBRA commando on leave was killed by an armed assailant on Friday in the Churachandpur region of Manipur, according to police. Constable Chonkholen Haokip of the Delta company of the 204th CoBRA Battalion was killed between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. Although the circumstances of his death are unknown, top officials think he was shot by assailants who appeared to be police officers as they approached his neighbourhood.
