Voting Begins for Khasi and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Councils in Meghalaya
Shillong: Polling for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections began on February 21 under tight security, marking a crucial electoral exercise for the region.
Voting commenced at 7 AM across 29 constituencies in both councils, with over 13 lakh tribal voters set to decide the fate of 158 candidates contesting in KHADC and 114 candidates in JHADC. The elections are being held across 1,798 polling stations in KHADC and 483 in JHADC, with 129 polling stations in KHADC and 95 in JHADC identified as vulnerable and critical.
Authorities have deployed adequate security forces to ensure free, fair, and peaceful voting. The results will be declared on Monday following the counting of votes, while the current term of both councils is set to expire on March 5.
