
Watershed Yatra Inspires Environmental Conservation Among Students in Meghalaya
Shillong: The Watershed Yatra, a nationwide initiative advocating for sustainable watershed management, recently reached Ganchikalak Secondary School in Meghalaya. The programme engaged students and faculty in a series of interactive activities focused on environmental conservation.
The event commenced with an inaugural ceremony, graced by Sengchim N Sangma, MLA of 59 Chokpot LAC, as the Chief Guest. The ceremony saw the presence of various dignitaries, including Former MDC Willy D Shira, Wennison Ch Marak, and Shri Pittingson R Marak, ADC of South Garo Hills.
The event featured interactive sessions, educating students on watershed conservation and sustainable resource management. A short skit highlighting the role of watershed management in environmental preservation and sustainable livelihoods captivated the audience. Additionally, a series of competitions, including essay writing, drawing, and painting on the theme “Importance of Natural Resource Management”, encouraged students to express their perspectives on conservation.
To further emphasize the cause, a tree plantation drive was conducted, where dignitaries, students, and staff participated in planting saplings to reinforce the message of environmental sustainability. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Sengchim N Sangma stated, “The Watershed Yatra aims to inspire a sense of responsibility among our youth towards preserving our natural resources.”
The Watershed Yatra is committed to fostering community-led sustainable watershed management practices, enhancing rural livelihoods, and contributing to a healthier ecosystem. Through education and active participation, the initiative seeks to empower communities to take ownership of their natural resources, ensuring long-term sustainability.
