West Assam Residents Laud Swift Action by Water Resource Department Amid Flood Crisis
Guwahati, 1st August: In a remarkable display of rapid response and engineering prowess, officials from the Dhubri district water resource department have been praised for constructing a 1,500-meter road-cum-bandh next to the Gangadhar River in just ten to fifteen days. This critical infrastructure project, completed during a devastating flood, has safeguarded hectares of cropland, human habitation, and government properties.
The initiative was launched in Koimari Part-I village Panchayat under the Agomoni revenue circle of Dhubri district. In 2022, the Gangadhar River breached a similar DRDA road-cum-bandh, inundating thousands of hectares of farmland and causing severe losses for local farmers.
In response to this crisis, Assam’s Water Resource Minister, Pijush Hazarika, spearheaded the reconstruction effort in May 2024. The new road-cum-bandh, built by the contractual firm SA Enterprise, has successfully protected approximately 25-30 villages with a population of around 50,000 people, including extensive agricultural land and government assets.
Villagers from Koimari and surrounding areas, including Bidyardabri, Chagolia Part-I, II, and III, and Halakura, have expressed their profound gratitude for the minister’s timely intervention. The construction, which was carried out without government funding but under a verbal agreement with SA Enterprise, has proven instrumental in preventing further damage from the rising waters of the Gangadhar River.
Residents commend Pijush Hazarika for his decisive action and effective management of the situation, ensuring that their homes and livelihoods were spared from the flood’s devastating impact.
