West Bengal: 18 killed in road mishap
Guwahati: At least eighteen people were reportedly killed in a road accident in Nadia district of West Bengal on Saturday.
According to reports, eighteen people were killed and five got severely injured in a head-on collision between a matador and a truck that was parked on the side of the road. The injured people were rushed to Shaktinagar district hospital.
The incident happened due to thick fog and the high speed of the vehicle in the Phulbari area of the district.
It was reported that the accident occurred when over 20 people were heading towards Navadwip crematorium in a matador carrying bodies from Bagda of North 24 Parganas.
Home Minister Amit Shah extended his condolences to the people who lost their lives in the accident. “The road accident that took place in Nadia district of West Bengal is very sad. My condolences to the people who lost their lives in this accident. God help them in this difficult situation. I wish the injured a speedy recovery”, he tweeted.
It may be mentioned that the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar also expressed his grief, and urged CM Mamata Banerjee to make efforts towards the kin of the victims. “Deeply pained at reported death of 18 people and 5 others injured in Nadia District after the vehicle they were traveling in collided with a truck parked on the side of road. Expect all efforts @MamataOfficial to the family of the deceased and injured. Need to promote Road Safety”, he wrote on Twitter.
However, the identity of the deceased persons is yet to be ascertained and further investigation into the matter is underway.
