West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Demands Resignations Over Women’s Safety, Highlights New Bill
National Desk, 3rd September: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on September 3 called for the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and chief ministers of states with inadequate women’s safety laws during her speech in the state assembly. This demand followed the presentation of the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024.
In her address, Banerjee underscored that the new legislation aims to ensure swift investigations, expedited justice, and harsher punishments for crimes against women. She emphasized, “Rape is a profound blight on humanity, and social reforms are crucial to prevent such heinous acts.” The Bill proposes the creation of an Aparajita Task Force within the police to facilitate timely investigations.
Banerjee praised the Bill as a “historic model for other states,” asserting that it addresses gaps in central legislation regarding justice for victims and their families. She rebutted BJP MLAs who chanted slogans demanding her resignation, questioning, “What if I raise slogans against the Prime Minister and the Home Minister for the same reasons you are against me?”
Criticizing states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat for high crime rates against women, Banerjee contrasted their performance with West Bengal’s efforts to deliver justice. She also expressed frustration over the lack of consultation with West Bengal before the passing of the BNS, noting her government’s attempts to discuss the issue post the new central government’s formation.
The Bill was passed unanimously later in the day, despite some disruptions in the House. Banerjee urged the Opposition to push the governor for prompt assent to the Bill and reaffirmed her government’s commitment to its effective implementation. She also called for stringent penalties, including death by hanging, in response to recent brutal crimes such as the rape and murder of a RG Kar medical college and hospital.
