West Bengal Junior Doctors Front Seeks Further Meeting with State Chief Secretary Amid Protests
National Desk, 18th September: The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front, engaged in protests over the brutal rape and murder of a fellow doctor at a Kolkata hospital, has formally requested a renewed meeting with the state Chief Secretary to address unresolved issues. While recent discussions with the government have led to some concessions, key demands remain unmet.
During a meeting on Tuesday, the state government agreed to several measures, including the removal of Kolkata’s police chief and two senior health officials. Despite these steps, the Junior Doctors Front emphasized that these actions only partially address their five-point list of demands.
In a press release, the Front expressed frustration over attempts to politicize their cause and false accusations that they are seeking positions of power rather than justice. “Our protests have faced numerous challenges, including efforts to create divisions among us through misinformation,” the statement read.
Although there was a lengthy discussion with the Chief Minister, the doctors felt the government’s response was inadequate. They have called for further dialogue to resolve their remaining concerns.
Additionally, the Junior Doctors Front criticized aspects of the proposed “Aparajita Act,” which suggests halting night shifts for doctors. They argue that such measures could negatively impact healthcare delivery and the profession as a whole.
The situation remains tense as the doctors await a response from the state government for a renewed meeting to ensure their concerns are fully addressed.
