Wild Elephant Found Dead at Assam’s Nagaon-Karbi Anglong Border
Guwahati, 29th July: A lifeless wild male elephant was discovered at Shilphata No. 1 on the Nagaon-Karbi Anglong border. The elephant, which was found near a local bar, had visible injuries and an unusually swollen front left thigh. It is believed to have died the previous night.
Local villagers reported that the elephant had been roaming the area for the past week. The forest department suspects that infighting within the elephant’s herd may have led to its death. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, with a detailed investigation to follow.
In a related incident, earlier this month, Golaghat Police arrested two officials from Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) Township. Chief Manager Ujjal Nayan Handique and Senior Manager Bedanga Kashyap were accused of attempting to conceal the death of a female wild elephant, which had been electrocuted. The remains of the elephant were found buried near Kaziranga National Park, leading to widespread outrage among conservationists.
