Woman Thief Nabbed at Ambubachi Mela in Guwahati; Stolen Items Recovered
Guwahati: Guwahati police arrested a woman on Wednesday at the Kalipur Ashram PCR for allegedly stealing from a devotee attending the Ambubachi Mela, one of Assam’s most prominent religious congregations.
The accused was apprehended red-handed thanks to the swift response of on-duty police personnel, who have been maintaining heightened vigilance amid large crowds and previous reports of petty thefts during the ongoing festival.
A thorough search led to the recovery of a Realme 11 Pro smartphone, ₹5,496 in cash, and a blue purse—all identified as belongings of a devotee participating in the spiritual event.
“The stolen items were recovered immediately thanks to the alertness of our team stationed at Kalipur Ashram,” said a senior police official overseeing security at the mela.
Legal proceedings have been initiated, and the woman remains in police custody. Investigators are also probing whether the accused is part of a wider theft syndicate operating in and around the mela grounds.
