Women protestors in Manipur start an ongoing roadblock on Imphal-Tiddim to protest the murder of a driver in Nagaland
Digital Desk: In Manipur, female activists on Sunday started a permanent road blockade to protest the killing of a motorist on the Imphal-Tiddim road.
The woman activists claimed they started the demonstration to seek punishment for those responsible for the kidnapping and death of Yengkhom Priyobrata, a driver from Manipur.
Tension in the neighbourhood was brought on by the murder of the driver.
Drivers in Manipur reportedly intend to organise protests over the murder as well.
The Nagaland counterpart was asked to provide any information that was available after the Manipur police conducted a routine investigation.
The driver’s body was reportedly discovered in Nagaland on Saturday after being reported missing on December 30.
“My husband has been doing a passenger’s service in his van between Imphal and Moreh, the border town. We heard from him at 9 p.m. on December 30 informing us that he will be going to Nagaland with some passengers.
“But later when we called him, he did not pick up the mobile phone and eventually it was switched off. We had lodged a missing report with the Bishnupur police station on January 2,” The Hindu quoted Yengkhom Ibemcha, Priyobrata’s wife as saying.
Manipur drivers had reportedly been beaten up, killed, and robbed on numerous occasions in some areas of Nagaland, according to the police.
