Women Vendors at Manipur’s Ima Market Seek Government Support Following Flood Damage

Northeast Desk, 30th May: Women vendors at Manipur’s iconic Ima Market are demanding government assistance after floods inundated surrounding areas, including the market’s godown, causing significant damage.

Asem Nirmala, secretary of Lukmai Sellup, a women’s market vendors’ association, reported extensive damage to property, estimating losses in lakhs.

The flooding submerged many items stored in the market’s godown, leaving women vendors in distress. With most market areas inundated, the resumption of economic activities faces delays, posing challenges for the livelihoods of women vendors who are often the primary earners for their families.

Nirmala urged the government to provide support to alleviate the plight of affected vendors.

Imphal’s Raj Medicity Hospital is encountering significant hurdles in delivering services as its ground floor remains inundated due to heavy rainfall in Manipur.

Ailing patients are being relocated to other healthcare facilities, including RIMS, JNIMS, and several other hospitals, to ensure continued medical care.

A rescue operation at Raj Medicity was conducted on May 29 with support from Arambai Tengol, State Forces, and the State Disaster Response Force team.

Other areas affected by flooding include Khwairamband Ima Market, Hotel Classic Grande, DM College campus, and the Manipur Press Club. Although rainfall intensity has lessened compared to May 28, several districts in the state witnessed significant precipitation until 3 pm on May 29.

Data from the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, revealed varying rainfall levels across districts, underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by the inclement weather conditions.
