Women’s Representation in CAPFs and State Police Forces on the Rise
New Delhi: The Indian government is making significant strides to increase the number of women in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and state police forces.
According to Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, the number of women in CAPFs and Assam Rifles has nearly tripled over the past decade, rising from 15,499 in 2014 to 42,190 in 2024. This represents a 4.4 percent increase in the total force strength.
The government is aiming to further bolster this number with plans to recruit 4,138 more women personnel in 2025.
To improve women’s representation in state and Union Territory police forces, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued multiple advisories urging state governments to increase the number of women police officers to 33 percent of the total strength.
The ministry has also recommended that each police station have at least three women sub-inspectors and 10 women police constables to ensure round-the-clock availability of women helpdesks.
While significant progress has been made, the government remains committed to further empowering women in law enforcement roles and ensuring their active participation in maintaining public safety and security.
