Wooden Dais Woes Halt Gogoi’s Grand Welcome in Guwahati

Guwahati: A grand felicitation ceremony for Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi was twice brought to a standstill today amidst concerns that the wooden dais, groaning under the weight of an enthusiastic crowd, might collapse. The unexpected drama unfolded at the Manabendra Sarma Complex in Dispur, transforming what was meant to be a smooth welcome into a chaotic scene.

Earlier in the day, Gogoi officially assumed his new role as party chief, taking over from Bhupen Kumar Borah at Rajiv Bhawan. He had begun his day seeking blessings at the revered Kamakhya temple, setting a spiritual tone for his new innings.

However, the spiritual calm soon gave way to a surge of human energy at the felicitation event later. With approximately 2,000 party members in attendance, a wave of excitement swept through the complex as Gogoi made his way towards the platform. A palpable jostle to greet the new president created a dynamic, albeit somewhat disorganised, atmosphere.

The situation escalated as various party leaders, dedicated workers, and members from frontal organisations eagerly clambered onto the wooden platform, all keen to felicitate Gogoi and other senior leaders. Designed for a limited capacity, the dais quickly became precariously overloaded with an estimated 300 individuals. This alarming sight prompted organisers to suspend the felicitation proceedings not once, but twice. Urgent pleas, amplified over the announcement system, implored “extra people to get off the stage otherwise it will cave in.” Both Gogoi himself and other senior leaders stepped in, actively intervening to bring some semblance of order to the passionate, yet potentially perilous, display of support.
