World’s highest rail bridge being constructed in J&K likely to be commissioned in Dec
Guwahati: The Chenab Rail Bridge, which is part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail connection (USBRL) project and is the world’s highest railway bridge, is an engineering marvel from Indian Railways.
The 1,315-meter-long Chenab River bridge on the Katra-Banihal train section in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district will tower 359 metres above the riverbed level when completed, making it the world’s highest railway bridge.
The bridge is part of the Northern Railway’s ambitious 272-kilometer rail link project, which is expected to cost Rs 28,000 crore.
The Chenab Rail Bridge’s base supports were declared complete in November 2017, enabling the building of the main arch to begin. The arch was completed in April 2021, and it is scheduled to open to rail service in December 2022.
Darshana Jardosh, Minister of State for Railways, recently shared some beautiful photos of the arch.
“Sharing some beautiful photos of the arch of the 1,315-meter-long Chenab River bridge. When completed, the bridge will tower 359 metres above the riverbed level, making it the world’s highest railway bridge. Indian Railways has created yet another engineering marvel “While sharing the photos, she wrote.
According to a report in Financial Express, the ministry also stated that it is the most significant civil-engineering problem that any Indian Railway project has faced in recent history. The 5.6-metre final metal piece was installed at the highest point and united the two arch arms that stretch towards each other from both river banks, according to the report. This completed the bridge’s arch form.
