Wrestlers protest: Delhi Police files chargesheet against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh

National Desk, 15 June: Delhi Police file a chargesheet in a sexual assault case on Thursday and in connection with the allegations made by a section of wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Charan Singh.

The chargesheet has been filed under sections 354, 354D, 345A & 506 (1) of IPC in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court.

In another case involving a minor, a cancellation report has been filed in Delhi Patiala House Court by the police. The court has scheduled the next hearing of the case on July 4, 2023. A cancellation report is filed in cases when no corroborative evidence is found.

“Since the case is related to POCSO Act, the court has fixed July 4 as the next date of hearing,” says public prosecutor Atul Srivastava.

Sports minister Anurag Thakur met Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik on June 7. During the meeting he assured the agitating wrestlers that the chargesheet in the sexual assault case would be filed by June 15. The star wrestlers then postponed their protest.

Delhi Police has also written to wrestling federation of foreign nations seeking some information as the incidents allegedly took place in around five different countries. Since foreign federations are yet to respond, the complaints related to those incidents will be added to the supplementary chargesheet as they have taken place abroad.

The details sought by the Delhi Police include photos and videos of the tournaments organised by the federation. According to police reports, the Delhi Police has also sought CCTV footage of the hotel or other places allowed the wrestlers to stay by the organisers.

Special Investigation Team set up in connection with the allegations against Brij Bhushan has so far examined the testimonies of more than 180 people. The party has visited the residence of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh in Gonda. He has also received testimonies from relatives, colleagues, domestic help and his associates of the MP. A woman wrestler was also taken to the official residence of the MP where the incident allegedly took place.
