Youth Commits Suicide Due to Alleged Police Harassment In Guwahati

Guwahati: In a tragic incident, a 28-year-old man from North Guwahati allegedly committed suicide after being harassed by police officers, according to his relatives.

The deceased has been identified as one Bhubaneswar Pal.

Reports claim that the deceased man’s wife went to the police station to register a complaint against him for allegedly using domestic violence. As a result, the police called Pal to the station.

The police allegedly sought a payment of Rs 40,000 if the wife decided not to file a complaint after she had already made up her mind.

His monthly salary of Rs. 6,000 made it impossible for him to pay such a large sum, thus he chose to make this drastic move.

His sister stated, “After he left the police station, he spoke to me and claimed that a few officers had hit him and demanded payment of Rs. 40,000 if he wanted to avoid spending at least a year in jail. He was worried since he could not afford to pay such a large sum with his income of just Rs 6000 per month and struggled to envision life without our mother.”

The family said that Pal was harassed by a police officer with the last name Rahman.

Meanwhile, the police have denied the allegations and said, “Three days back a woman registered a complaint of domestic violence against her husband, following which we summoned both of them to the police station and inquired about the situation and made both of them talk. They fought for trivial issues. Later, we made them understand and they said they will reconcile. Due to this no further case was registered.”
