Guwahati: A youth committed suicide by hanging himself in the police station lock-up in Jorhat on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Sabir Ansari. The incident took place at two o’clock in the middle of the night.
According to police, Ansari hanged himself in the bathroom of the lock-up. He was involved in stealing a mobile phone from a Muslim preacher and an FIR was lodged against him.
The victim’s sister said that he was apprehended by locals and after assaulting him badly, they handed Sabir to police the next morning.
She also claimed that her brother was ‘murdered’ by the police.
