Zoram People’s Movement Secures Landslide Victory in Mizoram’s Local Elections
Aizawl – The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has emerged as the dominant force in Mizoram’s recently concluded village council (VC) and local council (LC) elections, securing a commanding majority across the state.
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), ZPM won 266 out of 543 village councils and 54 out of 110 local councils. The Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress trailed behind, with MNF securing 153 VCs and Congress winning 43. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win just one village council seat.
ZPM dominated the overall seat tally, winning 1,153 out of 3,174 VC seats. MNF secured 744 seats, followed by Congress (406), BJP (17), Hmar People’s Convention (4), and independent candidates (87).
In the local council elections, which govern urban and municipal affairs, ZPM continued its strong performance, winning 363 seats out of 818. MNF secured 197, Congress won 147, and independents claimed 11.
The SEC reported that in 104 village councils and 13 local councils, no single party secured a clear majority, paving the way for coalition governance in these areas.
Polling took place on February 7, covering 534 village councils in nine districts—excluding areas under three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs)—as well as 110 local councils within the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC).
The elections witnessed high voter participation, with a 75% turnout in the village council polls and 64.79% in the local council elections. The polling process was conducted peacefully, the SEC confirmed.
The landslide victory marks a significant boost for ZPM, further solidifying its position as Mizoram’s dominant political force following its 2023 assembly election win.
