Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) Surges Ahead, Set to Form Government in Mizoram with a Commanding Lead
Northeast Desk, 4th December: The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) is poised to form the government in Mizoram as it takes a commanding lead with victories in 26 seats. In contrast, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) trails behind with only ten seats.
ZPM has reportedly instructed its winning MLAs to convene in the state capital, Aizawl, indicating the party’s intention to form a government independently without forming alliances. The party’s substantial lead positions it comfortably to achieve a majority in Mizoram.
With over 80% voter turnout in the state, 174 candidates, including 18 women, contested for the 40-member state assembly. To establish a government in Mizoram, a party needs to surpass the halfway mark of 21 seats.
The Congress, which was once a dominant force in Mizoram, is projected to have a poor showing with an expected 2-4 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is anticipated to settle with 0-2 seats, according to exit polls.
ZPM’s predicted vote share in the assembly election is 49%, while the MNF is expected to secure a 27% vote share. The Congress may receive 20% of the votes, and the BJP is projected to have a 2% vote share. The election results align closely with exit poll predictions.
