Remembering Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala on his birthday

Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala was a noted Assamese playwright, songwriter, poet, writer and film maker from Assam. His poems, songs, playwrights etc. are immensely popular and appreciated by the people of Assam. He was considered as Assamese cultural icon and his creative vision and writings made him popularly called as Rupkonwar of Assamese culture.

Jyoti Prasad Agarwala was born on 17 June 1903 in Tamulbari Tea Estate. His uncles were also renowned Assamese poets. Jyoti Prasad Agarwala went to Edinburgh in 1926 to study economics, but returned in 1930 before completing his course. On his way back, he spent seven months at the UFA studio in Germany to learn film-making. After his return to Assam he produced the first Assamese film named Joymoti, the film was based on a play written by Laxminath Bezbarua.

Jyoti Prasad Agarwal had written over 300+ songs and over 10 playwrights and 2 films. He died of cancer on 17 January 1951 in Tezpur. His works are still remembered now people still praise his songs, poems and playwrights.
