1O More Detained In Connection With Child Marriages In Raha
Guwahati: Another 10 violators have been detained by Assam Police from Raha on Thursday as part of the Assam government’s crackdown against child marriage.
Ten persons were reportedly detained by the Nagaon Police in Assam on suspicion of underage marriages in the district’s Raha town.
They were detained following intensive searches conducted across Raha, officials informed.
The number of arrests related to the campaign against child marriages across the state was reported earlier in the day by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
CM Sarma informed that as many as 2,666 arrests have been made in the case in Assam to date. This has risen from 2,441 arrests as of February 6.
The Assam CM took to Twitter to inform about the arrest count. He wrote, “Our crackdown against child marriage continues with 2,666 arrests made so far.”
“The drive against this social evil will continue. We seek the support of the people of Assam in our fight against this social crime,” he further wrote.
Earlier on Monday, the CM Himanta Biswa Sarma reported that 2,441 people had been arrested in relation to child weddings in the state.
Taking to Twitter today, CM Sarma updated about the number of arrests in the case so far. He wrote, “Total arrest so far – 2441. Crackdown against Child marriage continues in #assam.”
This occurs when the seventh day of the Assam Police’s widespread investigation into child marriage cases begins. Following the chief minister’s explicit commands, the police have taken action, including making arrests of people involved in underage marriages.
It should be mentioned that as of Sunday, February 5, there have been 2,278 arrests made in all of Assam. 139 people were detained in Biswanath, 130 in Barpeta, 126 in Dhubri, 123 in Baksa, 117 in Bongaigaon, 101 in Nagaon, 94 in Kokrajhar, 85 in Kamrup, and 84 in each of the districts of Goalpara and Udalguri, according to information provided by the Assam police.
The manhunt was started on February 3 following orders from the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to end child marriage and arrest suspects.
The Assam chief minister has said that the campaign against child marriage will go on till the 2026 state assembly elections.
4,074 cases of child marriage in all were reported to the police. The CM had directed the police to carry out a probe as he had got inputs about child marriage being rampant in the state.
